Save The Children, Child Friendly Spaces provide children with a safe and inclusive environment to learn, play and be protected. We’re also providing psychosocial support to children and their families to increase their resilience and ability to cope.

When people talk about the potential casualties of our climate crisis, education rarely gets a mention. But for children like 14-year-old Sreyvatey, who lives in a floating house on Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, the threat is very real.
Sreyvatey – or Vatey for short – is a star pupil. “Vatey was selected as the president of the Students Council because she is an outstanding and hardworking student,” says her headteacher, Tan Vanhong.
She and her classmates have to travel to the floating school by boat. Now, as the weather on the lake becomes ever more extreme, Sreyvatey’s schooling – and her future – is at risk. The more frequent storms make the journey to school more dangerous, while the increasingly intense heat in the dry season makes it hard for children to concentrate.
“When the weather changes drastically, when the sun is really hot, I cannot study,” says Sreyvatey.
To protect children’s futures, Save the Children’s GREEN project on the lake has installed solar-powered fans so Sreyvatey and her friends can keep cool while they’re learning. We’ve repaired the storm damage and decorated the classrooms to make them a more inviting and creative environment for children to learn in.
We’ve also introduced eco lessons to the curriculum, so children learn about climate change and the environment. Her newfound knowledge has inspired Sreyvatey to lead her classmates in their efforts to clean up a lake polluted by rubbish – and get her community to do the same.
“We rode boats to campaign for environmental awareness – making people aware of not throwing trash into the water, and reusing bottles to grow vegetables.”
Sreyvatey’s family, like so many on the lake, fish for a living. So by cleaning up her environment she’s helping preserve the fragile livelihood of her family and her community.
